Burford Background
Burford, often called the “Gateway to the Cotswolds,” is a town with a history stretching back over a thousand years.
Its origins lie in the Saxon period, when a settlement grew around a strategic
crossing of the River Windrush. By the 12th century, Burford had developed into an
important market town, benefitting from its position on major medieval trade routes
linking the southwest to Oxford and London. The town’s prosperity grew further
during the wool trade boom, and many of the fine limestone buildings that line the
iconic High Street were funded by wealthy wool merchants.
In 1649, Burford became the stage for one of the most dramatic episodes of the English Civil War. After the Leveller mutiny against Cromwell’s army, rebels were imprisoned in Burford Church, and several were executed in the churchyard—an event still commemorated annually.
The town’s architectural heritage, from its gabled inns to its medieval bridge, tells the story of centuries of craftsmanship and commerce. St. John the Baptist Church, with its impressive spire and intricate tombs, reflects Burford’s historic affluence and community importance.
Today, Burford combines its deep-rooted heritage with a vibrant modern character, remaining one of the most picturesque and historically significant towns in the Cotswolds.
